The Best Things To Do in Manchester This Weekend

The weekend is upon us once again - and it's going to be a very busy one! The Manchester International Festival kicked off in style on Thursday night as locals and visitors packed into Piccadilly Gardens for What Is the City but the People?, a unique celebration of Manchester culture and identity. MIF17 continues into the weekend and through to 16th July, promising 18 extraordinary days of events across the city. On top of this, we have a range of theatre, cinema, live music and days out to make sure your weekend is a memorable one.

Macabre and Magic in Stockport

Rat's Tales is a collection of seven dark and enchanting folktales from around the world, all brought together by former Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy. This adaptation is performed by Stockport Garrick Youth in the theatre's main auditorium. With tickets priced at just £5 for performances on Friday and Saturday evening, this is a perfect opportunity to see the rising theatrical stars of tomorrow in the country's oldest 'Little Theatre,' where high-quality plays have been staged continuously since 1901.

A Party with a Difference

One of the most intriguing and exciting events of MIF17, Party Skills for the End of the World is a wild, immersive show with the aim of teaching you how to survive the when the end finally comes - and how to have a great time whilst doing it. This celebration of everything that's made life worth living takes place in an amazing venue and ensures that you learn all those essential survival skills such as starting a fire, making balloon animals and, naturally, mixing the perfect Martini. An unforgettable night and the perfect tonic for a tumultuous modern age.

Decadence at The Quays

Vintage glamour, retro decadence and good old fashioned debauchery takes over the Quays Theatre at on Friday evening as The Slippery Belle returns for more Burlesque At The Lowry. International superstar Velma Von Bon Bon will be performing, along with the exotic Raven Noir and the sensational Didi Derriere. Sultry Eva Fox, 'Sultan of Spin' Trevor Organ and award-winning comedian Ria Lina are also on the bill, making this an evening you don't want to miss!

Latin, Jive and Rock 'n' Roll

Bursting onto the live music scene in 2005, Dominic Halpin and The Honey B's are one of the most in-demand acts in the UK, having racked up an impressive list of show dates including Blenheim Palace and the Abu Dhabi International Jazz Festival. Their packed, energetic shows have entertained audiences all over the world, but their spiritual home must surely be Altrincham's Cinnamon Club. The band return to the venue which boasts the largest sprung dancefloor in the North West on Friday for another superb night of latin, jive and rock 'n' roll.

Adventures on The High Quays

Saturday marks the first voyage of summer 2017 for the Princess Katherine, a fine vessel which offers adventurous tours around the Salford Quays and Manchester Ship Canal. The 60-minute round trip departs from outside The Lowry Centre up to five times a day and offers a unique insight into the history of the area and unparalleled Manchester panoramas including Media City UK, Old Trafford and the disused dry docks. If you've never seen Manchester from the water this is the perfect opportunity (you might also spot a TV star or footballing hero...) Tea and coffee is available on all trips, as well as a fully stocked bar for those who wish to treat themselves to a tipple whilst cruising the relaxing waterways.

Del Toro at The Plaza

Stockport Plaza is one of the Britain's last remaining "super cinemas." The 1314-seat theatre, dating back to 1932, is a glorious example of art deco architecture and a throwback to the glory days of cinema. This Sunday, a special cinematic event from Grimm Up North sees the historic Plaza host an all-day movie marathon dedicated to "the Mexican master of the macabre," Guillermo Del Toro. Four of Del Toro's finest films will be shown back-to-back on the Plaza's enormous screen. More information can be found here.

Love, Death and Jazz Chickens

On Sunday, The Lowry's Lyric Theatre plays host to an intimate evening in discussion with one of the most celebrated comics of his generation. Eddie Izzard has also developed an equally stellar reputation as a film, television, and stage actor, political activist, sometime escapologist and multiple marathon-runner. Eddie will read extracts from his new memoir and share personal family moments and photographs with the audience. It is a story that starts back in Aden where he was born and includes his earliest childhood memories, the devastating death of his mother when he was six, boarding school and early years street performing. Following the discussion there will be a Q+A and audiences will be invited to ask Eddie their own questions.
